Sato Crimp and Winder
FAQs

LINEWINDER

Q. Will the winder work with any power drill?

   A. The winder will accommodate most any corded power drill with a collar.
The collar is the section designed to fit the handle that comes with the drill.

Q. Will the Foot Switch work with any drill motor?

   A. The foot switch will work with any variable speed, 6 amp, or less, 110 volt drill motor with a locking switch.

Q. Will a rechargeable drill work with the winder?

   A. No, because those drills don't have a collar for attachment, and the battery won't hold up under sustained torque for as long as is required to spool up a larger reel.

Q. Will the winder work with spectra?

   A. One of the main objectives in designing this winder was for it to pack spectra tightly onto a reel.

Q. Can the Winder be used to clean spectra?

   A. Yes, the spectra can be wound off on a hollow Swifty Spectra Washing spool, washed, rinsed, dried, wound onto a hard spool, stored or packed back onto the reel.
(The Spectra Washing Spool is an option.)

Q. How large of a reel will the winder accommodate?

   A. I've used this winder with reels up to 80 Penn and 80 Shimano. I do have a heavy- duty aluminum Pac-Bay reel seat option for the winder. The limitation is that it works on large reels only.

Q. Why doesn't the winder kit come with a drill motor?

   A. A lot of guys already have a drill they can use. Liability insurance issues won't allow me to sell it as part of the kit. I can sell it as a separate transaction. I have heard that they can be had on EBay for prices I can't print.

Q. Is there a line counter available?

   A. Yes, it's an optional add-on. It comes with a custom designed bracket which holds the counter and a rod guide so the line stays on the counter wheel. The bracket will fit right into the pre-drilled holes on the winder base. The counter is analog not digital, the line actually turns the counter wheel. These counters are hard to find.

Q. What Comes in the Winder Kit?

   A. The kit contains: drill motor bracket, bulk spool bracket, Fuji adjustable reel seat bracket and assembly, variable speed footswitch to control the drill speed hands-free, Swifty Line Stripping assembly, (8"x1/2" threaded stud, nuts and washers). Base board, (marine grade 3/4" sanded plywood),. Three sizes of chuck keys to fit various sizes of reels. The keys have a rubber-coated arm to protect the finish on the reel handles.

Q. What materials are used in the winder?

   A. The winder is made from machined 6061 aluminum and chrome plated steel.
The parts are hand cut, debured, and tumbled for a smooth industrial finish.

CRIMPING SYSTEM

Q. How did The Sato Crimp System come about?

   A. The original idea was conceived a number of years ago by others. But along the way for one reason or another the pliers and crimps started having problems of various sorts. I came along and wanted to obtain the system but found it unavailable or out of production. So with the help of some friends, I decided to re-engineer and manufacture a couple of sets of pliers for myself and friends. Little did I know, after 1000's of hours and dollars, I had to go into business to help cover the cost of tooling and manufacturing for that original one dozen tools.

Q. How long has the Sato Crimp System been in existence?

   A. The new pliers, crimps and kit were officially introduced in December 2003. on a Taka's Tackle charter on the Royal Polaris. Testing had been going on for a year prior to the introduction.

Q. What's the difference between crimping mono to spectra vs. mono to a hook?

   A. You are doing two completely separate things to your mono. In crimping mono to a hook, you are squeezing or pinching the mono in two places and folding the mono around the eye of the hook with a lot of force. In crimping the sleeve around the mono/spectra connection you are squeezing the crimp down hard enough so that the spectra will not slide up and down the mono. You do not want to bruise the mono in any way. A lot people are misinformed about how the system actually works.

Q. What's the advantage of a crimped mono/spectra connection over a Bimini/Albright connection?

   A. Only in the size and profile of the connection going through the guides.

Q. Why do I need your crimping pliers?

   A. The pliers and crimps have been designed and engineered to specifically work together. There no other pliers currently in production that can do the job properly. The manufacturing tolerances are held to .005". All pliers are personally hand inspected for 12 individual tolerances.

Q. Can I use the Spectra adhesive with the crimp?

   A. Yes, its highly recommended that you use both together.

Q. Can I just use the Spectra adhesive without a crimp?

   A. The adhesive was designed to be used in conjunction with either a crimp or serve.

Q. Is the crimped mono/spectra connection any stronger than a served connection?

   A. If done properly both are of equal strength. Both have been know to fail if not done properly.

Q. What is the advantage of a crimped vs. a served connection?

   A. The crimped connection is quicker and easier than serving. The serving can be done quickly but not well. To serve a connection properly, one has to take some time and effort in doing the overhand knots and winds with sufficient pressure and consistency that is difficult to do on a rolling deck or galley.

Q. What crimp sizes are available to make mono/spectra connections?

   A. The sizes available are: 40#, 50#, 60#, 80#, 100#, 135#, 150#, 200#, 300#

Q. Can I buy the crimps separately?

   A. Yes.
